The Weakest Link Controls Your Production

Nowhere is it more important to have evenly matched capabilities than in the equipment that makes up your production lines. For many manufacturers, automated material handling equipment (AMHE) is often an after-thought. It's considered less important than the processing equipment. This, however, can be a mistake in planning that can haunt your production line long after installation.

AMHE is the highway that dictates traffic flow. The more closely matched the highway is to the number of cars passing over it, the better. Unfortunately, in the same way commuters curse at their highway departments for not building roads capable of handling the load, many processing lines suffer the same fate. It's not the road's fault for being subpar, it is the planners responsibility to take into consideration the needs of the city.

Four Considerations for Smart Automated Material Handling Equipment
Have you planned appropriately for your AMHE needs? Here is a brief list of important considerations when planning your production line:

  1. A production line is only as good as its weakest part. Is every machine in the line built for similar operating capabilities for all products being run?
  2. AHME saves labor. What could be handled by automation that is currently handled by labor? By how much could your Workman's Comp costs decrease if automated equipment handled more of the process?
  3. Often, the budget has run out after buying just the processing equipment. Have you involved an AHME expert at project conception to assist in determining an effective strategy to ensure your automated material handling will match your performance standards?
  4. Long-term floor space planning. Proper layout/configuration within the plant will predict the physical plant needs in the future, and smart AHME planning can eliminate costly expenditures later.

Because material handling is often an oversight in the planning process, production lines suffer a slow, unprofitable death. In a twist of irony, the most neglected part of the processing line often ends up controlling the productivity of the entire process!
